Imagine the universe is an apple skin and there is a worm walking all along the skin. The distance from one point to the opposite is equal to the circunference of the apple, if the worm stays on the apple's surface. But, instead of that, the worm would dig a hole in the apple he could cross the apple and the distance could be much sorted.
